All about Australia’s Climate

The two useful factors for international students to consider Australia for their further studies is location and climate. Australia, a large nation with a land area of over  7.5 million square kilometres (3 million square miles) and is located in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are the polar opposite of those in Europe and the United States. We will discuss all of Australia’s climate in-depth on the blog.

Since Australia is such a vast continent, many areas experience a variety of weather conditions depending on their latitude. The majority of Australia’s four seasons, with a rainy and dry season in the tropical north and the region crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, has an arid climate defined as desert or semi-desert, likewise, on the southern coast, the climate is more temperate, oceanic or Mediterranean.

The hottest months in Australia are December and January, with an average temperature of  29°C , while the coldest months are July and August having an average temperature of 13°C. Moreover, spring runs from September to November.

Australian East Coast

The most populated area in Australia is the East Coast. The sudden change of weather due to ocean water is an extraordinary aspect of the east coast.

Melbourne experiences all four seasons with warm summers, autumns, mild springs and winters. The northern area of Melbourne is a bit dryer and warmer. The weather in Sydney is warm but mild throughout the year, while Brisbane is hotter and dryer.

Summer nights are humid, while winter nights are cold or rainy.

Western Australia

Temperatures in Western Australia during the winter, (April-September), range from 24 degrees Celsius to about 34 degrees Celsius. While temperatures during the summer, (October-March), are usually in the mid to high 30s, with high humidity.

Summers in Perth are hot and dry, with mild winters. It’s rare for it to rain in the summer, but thunderstorms and rain are normal in the fall and winter.

Northern Australia

Temperatures in Northern Australia during the wet season range from 25 degrees Celsius to about 33 degrees Celsius with high humidity and monsoonal rains. While temperatures during the summer are usually in the mid to high 30s, with cool dry nights.

Even though Darwin and Cairns have great distances, they have similar weather patterns throughout the year.

Australian Desert

Australia Desert is mainly referred to as outback on Australian maps and the climate is very hot and dry. Temperatures as high as 50°C have been reported on some days. Many people are unaware that the outback will experience sub-zero temperatures in the winter.

The climate is very unpredictable in the outback of Australia.
