Requirements to Obtain an Australian Student Visa

Australia is one of the most popular destinations worldwide for international students. It delivers internationally recognized education at a low cost, with the government providing scholarships to qualified candidates. And for this, you need to maintain all the requirements to obtain an Australian Student Visa.

Top-ranked universities, cultural diversity, and other factors are among the key reasons why many students choose to continue their education in Australia.

You need to prove to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection that you meet all the visa requirements so that you get accepted for a Student Visa in Australia.

This blog will cover the requirements needed to apply for the visa briefly.

Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement (GTE)

Since November 2011, GTE expects candidates to prove that they only plan to stay in Australia for study or as a dependant or guardian, to accompany a student. The factors DIBP will be considering are listed below:

Your home country’s circumstances

The chance for you to be in a difficult situation in Australia

Your immigration background

Your selected course’s worth and relevance to your future

Any additional pertinent issues

You may be required to attend an interview at an Australian embassy near you to see if you fit the GTE requirements.

English Language Proficiency

If you belong to a non-English speaking nation, you will have to prove that you have a sufficient understanding of English. There are several examinations to establish your English speaking, listening, writing, and reading capabilities, including the PTE, TOEFL, IELTS, and CAE. The score requirements depend on the university you are applying to or the course type you are pursuing.

Financial Requirements

Another evidence you need to show to get a student visa is that you have enough funds to cover your tuition, travel and living expenses. You must be able to establish that you have AUD 19, 830 for a year. If you have any dependents, you will also need to present proof that you can afford their living expenses.

If you are an eligible student applying for scholarships will also be a great help financially.

Health Requirements

To prove you are in excellent health, you may be asked to undertake a medical or radiological examination. So, you must make an appointment with an Australian Immigration Department-approved doctor.

It is a compulsion to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students to maintain health insurance for as long as your stay.  An individual will need OSHC before applying for Australian Student visas.

Character Requirements

Authorities check to see if you have a significant criminal past to guarantee that you have a decent character. A criminal clearance certificate or a police statement may be required. It’s also possible that you’ll be required to fill out a Character Statutory Declaration Form.

Federal Budget 2021–2022 Immigration Australia

Only a few days ago the government made a few main announcements for migrants through the Federal Budget 2021-2022 Immigration. The government expects Australia’s international border to reopen gradually starting in mid-2022.

We have explained the changes in the federal budget in a concise manner that may be of assistance to you.

Australia’s international border is expected to reopen gradually starting in mid-2022.

The Federal Budget made a few prime assumptions for 2021-2022 based on many factors that are highly uncertain like the status of COVID-19, new strains and more. The borders will only be opened when it is safe.

The government has recommended that the vaccine rollout should be completed by the end of 2021. From late 2021 to 2022, there will be a gradual return of international students through small programs.

Negative Net Overseas Migration (NOM)

Since World War II, Australia has had a negative Net Overseas Migration (NOM) forecast for the second year in a row. When the NOM is negative, it means that more migrants are leaving Australia than are arriving.

Net Overseas Migration (NOM) is now expected to decline from around 154,000 people in 2019-20 to around -72,000 people by the end of 2020-21. However, by 2024-25, it is expected to gradually rise to around 235,000 people.

The NOM will take some time to recover to pre-pandemic levels, and that migration will be slow and gradual in the coming years.

The Government maintains the same Migration Program Level as 2020-21

In 2021-22, the government will maintain the 160,000 Permanent Visa placements planned in the 2020-21 Migration Program, with a nearly equal split between Skilled and Family Visas.

Skilled visas will account for roughly half of all migration, with the Employer-Sponsored, Business Innovation and Investor Program, and Global Talent visa streams prioritizing highly skilled migrants.

For 2021-22, the number of family visas will be limited to 77,300.

Four years to access government welfare

According to the Federal Budget announcement, new Australians will have to wait four years to receive government assistance.

It is estimated that the government will save $671 million over the next five years. More than 14,000 migrants and 40,000 families will be affected due to the announcement.

Although these changes in the Federal Budget have brought some good news to international students who work. Soon, they can work more than 40 hours in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

A visa application can still be made. Even though visas are still being issued, onshore applications are being given priority. Offshore applicants may be permitted to enter Australia if they fulfil the requirements of a Travel Exemption.

Hope this blog was helpful to you guys. If you need more information on the changes of the Federal Budget or any other queries regarding studying in Australia or choosing a course, we are here to help.

All about Australia’s Climate

The two useful factors for international students to consider Australia for their further studies is location and climate. Australia, a large nation with a land area of over  7.5 million square kilometres (3 million square miles) and is located in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are the polar opposite of those in Europe and the United States. We will discuss all of Australia’s climate in-depth on the blog.

Since Australia is such a vast continent, many areas experience a variety of weather conditions depending on their latitude. The majority of Australia’s four seasons, with a rainy and dry season in the tropical north and the region crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, has an arid climate defined as desert or semi-desert, likewise, on the southern coast, the climate is more temperate, oceanic or Mediterranean.

The hottest months in Australia are December and January, with an average temperature of  29°C , while the coldest months are July and August having an average temperature of 13°C. Moreover, spring runs from September to November.

Australian East Coast

The most populated area in Australia is the East Coast. The sudden change of weather due to ocean water is an extraordinary aspect of the east coast.

Melbourne experiences all four seasons with warm summers, autumns, mild springs and winters. The northern area of Melbourne is a bit dryer and warmer. The weather in Sydney is warm but mild throughout the year, while Brisbane is hotter and dryer.

Summer nights are humid, while winter nights are cold or rainy.

Western Australia

Temperatures in Western Australia during the winter, (April-September), range from 24 degrees Celsius to about 34 degrees Celsius. While temperatures during the summer, (October-March), are usually in the mid to high 30s, with high humidity.

Summers in Perth are hot and dry, with mild winters. It’s rare for it to rain in the summer, but thunderstorms and rain are normal in the fall and winter.

Northern Australia

Temperatures in Northern Australia during the wet season range from 25 degrees Celsius to about 33 degrees Celsius with high humidity and monsoonal rains. While temperatures during the summer are usually in the mid to high 30s, with cool dry nights.

Even though Darwin and Cairns have great distances, they have similar weather patterns throughout the year.

Australian Desert

Australia Desert is mainly referred to as outback on Australian maps and the climate is very hot and dry. Temperatures as high as 50°C have been reported on some days. Many people are unaware that the outback will experience sub-zero temperatures in the winter.

The climate is very unpredictable in the outback of Australia.

Reasons for Visa Cancellation Australia

A visa can only be granted, refused, or cancelled by the Minister or a representative of the Minister, and it can be optional, obligatory, or by operation of law. Although, sometimes you also can ask the home affairs government to cancel your visa. There are a few reasons for visa cancellation in Australia and we will discuss them briefly in this blog.

If your visa is revoked, the visas of all of your family members may be revoked as well.

The main reasons your visa gets cancelled is if:

You did not follow the terms of your visa.

You did not meet the character requirements.

On your visa application, you submitted false details.

Detailed reasons for your visa cancellation:

Character Grounds

If you fail to pass a “character test,” as described in section 501 (6) of the Migration Act 1958, your visa may be cancelled. The following are the reasons why you would not pass the test:

Have a criminal record of imprisonment of 12 months or more; or

Found guilty of a sexually based crime that involves a child; or

Have a connection to someone, a group, or an organization that is suspected of engaging in illegal activity.

You will be given 28 days to represent why the decision to cancel the visa should be revoked.

Paying for Sponsorship

The other reason to get your visa cancelled is if you are involved in the payment of visa sponsorship.

However, if you were involved in payment due to human trafficking, or threats.

Changes to study

If your enrolment in a registered course has ended, your student visa will be revoked. In the following situations your visa might get cancelled:

Even after the course is completed you do not leave Australia or apply for any other visas.

You changed your course after receiving your student visa, and your key course ends sooner than expected, and you do not leave Australia or apply for any other visas within the next 28 days.

The things that are considered before cancelling your visa are:

You legitimately completed the course early.

Have a strong academic record.

it is fair to anticipate that you will enrol in another course during the course gap.

Biosecurity Contraventions

Border protection is extremely strict and you must report all things you carry with you, including food, plants, and animals.  Your visa may be cancelled by the Minister if:

Failed to explain the reason you brought goods.

Do not obey the Biosecurity Officer’s instructions.

Falsify facts about your products.

Importation of objectionable goods

If unacceptable goods and materials are imported without authorization, the temporary visa may be revoked. If the products contain any references to sex, drugs, crime, brutality, or violence, your visa will be revoked. List of prohibited goods

More about Visa Cancellation

If you are in Australia or have completed immigration clearance, the Australian Government will normally inform you that they are considering cancelling your visa and allow you to provide reasons why it should not be cancelled.

What should you do now the visa is cancelled?

If your visa is revoked, you will be unable to apply for new visas and prevent you from being issued such visas to travel, enter, or remain in Australia

If the visa is cancelled due to character grounds the only visa you can apply for is a Protection Visa. If you are expelled from Australia for reasons of character, you can find it difficult to pass the character test when applying for a new visa to re-enter the country.

Also, the Criminal Justice Entry visa candidates can apply for Protection Visa only.

If you’ve been denied a Protection visa after your last visit to Australia, you won’t be able to apply for one again.

You can see the official Visa statistics here.

Is the money of the Australian visa fee refundable?

It is almost impossible to get a refund of the visa application payment, which is the fee charged to the Department of Immigration at the time of submitting an Australian visa application.

Intakes in Australia

Australian universities offer two prime intakes for international students. These intakes are also referred to as semesters in most universities.  The intakes in Australia are:

  1. February Intake (Semester 1)
  2. July Intake (Semester 2)

February Intake

It’s the main intake for Australia. The classes start in late February or early March and end in late May or early June. Applicants will get numerous courses and universities options in this intake as it is a primary semester.

The deadline for this semester is between October and November.

July Intake

The classes start in July or early August and end in November. The courses and universities option will be slightly less than the main intake.

The deadline for this semester is between April and May.

The application process should be prepared accordingly because different universities have different deadlines for intakes. It is best if you begin before six months. Complete Language and Entrance Tests before three months, and devote the remaining time to the admissions and visa applications.

Few numbers of universities offering limited courses have intakes like September and November in Australia.

If you choose to study a vocational course then the deadline for this is January, May or July.

Which intake is best for me?

Each intake has its own set of amenities and benefits. If you have all of the required paperwork, you can apply for any intake that fits your needs. However, we recommend that you do not apply in rush or you will miss out on the opportunity to study in Australia.

As previously stated, February intakes offer a variety of courses from most universities; if you are ready, this intake might be for you; if not, wait until the next one.

The majority of foreign students, mostly Indian students, enrol in July, but February is also a good option for certain programs. However, before deciding on the best intake for you, consider the following factors:

Acceptance rates

Preferred program’s availability

Availability of Job Opportunities
